Good evening world!

Had a Stress test a couple weeks ago and am ready to go.  I've been involved in athletics all my life, but have typically loathed running just to run.  Played a mid-fielder in soccer when I was young and spent hours doing wind sprints and chasing a little ball around so I know running is in me, but ... I may be a little too much on the fast twitch side of things.  That's okay though.  we'll see how this goes.  I would like to keep a decent (for me) squat since deep squatting helps my knees and hips to feel good.  I should rename the blog, "Heavy and Slow" to reflect my long-distance running sensibilities.  lol.

I'll only check my weight once a week.  I don't want to obsess over it ... this is about health to me.  Ultimately I'd like to get down to 195 lbs.  I'd like running to be a part of accomplishing this goal.

09/14/10 Edit:  I'd like to keep track of my food intake, but being diabetic ... instead of "calories", I may just keep track of grams of carbohydrate ... this is something I already do.  I usually can lose weight with ~225 grams of carbohydrates a day within a balanced diet of protein and fat intake (and normal activity).  With running ... I'll have to see how my body responds (I.e., insulin requirements).

Recently moved to South Jordan from Davis County ... trying to figure out the nice trails around here to run on.  Too busy to run tomorrow, so will try to find a trail nearby to run on on Thursday.

EDIT:  Hmmm.... I'm off by one calendar day (Doh!) ... I'll post tomorrow and be back on track.  I didn't have time to run today anyway ... had tons of meetings until late in the day and didn't make home in time to go for a late run.  Time to get those 7 hours sleep time I've already said I'd get. ;)

From burp on Thu, Sep 16, 2010 at 18:04:27 from 64.122.178.113

My online persona, burp, goes back a long time ... . While creating an account on an e-mail server ... you know the drill ... everything I typed in was taken.

I just happened to burp at the time (I think ... maybe this is lore now) and put "burp" in to see if it would accept it. It did! Every since then, I've gone by "burp" or a variation thereof "burpsan" (Mr. burp in Japanese). Easy to remember, amusing to most people, and very few burps out there = ideal online persona.

Disclaimer: Of course, I've run into other burps since then, so there's only one original burp (me as far as I know) and other imposters out there.

No activity today.  Late home from work and stomach unsettled.

Did scope out one of the canals that Davy Crockett mentions on his web page ( http://www.crockettclan.org/blog/ ).  Not too far from my home.  I noticed with a lot of the new development that there are a few signs posted here and there to not trespass on the service road along the canal.  Some locations have no signs posted.  Has Davy Crockett run this recently?  I'll have to ask.  Looks pretty convenient for me and it would be off the pavement.  We'll check it out.

Finally got out for a nice run this evening.  Checked out along one of the canals near my new home and ran out along it for a ways ... made a loop back to my house on some walking paths.  Surprising how easy it felt considering this is only the second time I've run this month.

Will be checking my weight every Monday morning.  It may appear that I've lost ~12 pounds last week ... totally bogus.  I put in 232 last week just to get going as an estimate.  That was the weight I was at a couple of weeks ago, mid-afternoon (after lunch), and fully clothed.

I'll use the 220.5 as the baseline going forward.  Good thing is ... 10 less pounds to mentally lose.  This puts me at 25 - 30 lbs to go.

Played some tennis, then ran with my wife tonight.  She rips up the tennis courts and likes to do 100 meter interval training.  I joined her on several intervals, but my legs were a little drained still from Saturday.  Fun to do some all out sprints though.  Guess this old man still has a little kick left in him.  My wife still kicked my butt though!!!

Still a little smoke in the air here in Daybreak from the nearby Herriman fire.  My lungs were burning a little toward the end of my run tonight.

I was deeply saddened as I watched the fire driven down the mountainside by the wind last night from my house.  Not sure how many homes were lost ... I'll need to check the news.

No running today.  Resting a little.  I really don't feel like I have the mileage base to run every single day.  I think different body parts would start to rebel.  3-4 times a week will be my goal for now.

Sasha's advice would be to run 6 days a week without fail. Run just enough that you could turn around and run the same distance the next day without being sore. Make sure you get your proper sleep for your body to recover. Take it for what it's worth.

Did those fires die down yet?

From burp on Wed, Sep 22, 2010 at 14:06:37 from 64.122.178.113

Good advice, Burt. I felt pretty good yesterday and likely could have gotten out for a run.

I've thought about doing my weight training on the off days. Of course, this may affect my running but I hope to strike a balance between the two (I.e., improve in both). Particularly want to avoid overtraining on the lifting side of things.

There's still smoke in the air, but I can't see the flames from my house anymore. I'm thinking that a lot of the houses are out of danger now unless something kicks up again. Not sure how much has officially been contained though.

Good evening!

The cool weather helped push me past 5 miles tonight.  Quiet, contemplative, mild pace.  My right hamstring is a little tight from the intervals the other day, but feels good after tonight's run.

Discovered that site Map My Run to help with the distances.  Looks like I may have been underestimating some of my distances.  Last Saturday's run was spot on my guess.  I'm sure there's some variation depending on my mouse clicks, but as long as I have a relative value I don't really care too much.

Good night everyone!!!

The film was a romance film called Kinamand (Danish) or Chinaman (English) starring Bjarne Henriksen and Vivian Wu.  Anyone seen it?  Both my wife and I enjoyed it.

Possible spoiler alert ....

There is a quote at the end before the credits ...

Stepped on a sharp piece of metal Friday and ended up with a puncture wound in my right arch. Have taken a few days off to let it heal up a bit.

My lovely wife wanted to go for a run tonight, so we went out for about a 5k. Was fun running with my wife. No intervals or court sprints tonight for me!  My foot must be healed up enough to run now ... didn't really bother me.

Helped someone move a piano last Saturday and strained my legs a little (muscles were cold w/ no light lifting to warm up with).  Feel good now, so went for a run tonight.

Was Happy to have my wife with me.  She runs faster than I do at these shorter distances, so I have to try to keep up.  Pushes me a bit.  But when we run the longer distances, I can pace myself through it until she slows down.  Or maybe she's just being kind (?!)  ;-)

"Days go by without a single bowl of food;
Whom can I ask for one?
At night my tattered rags fail to cover me,
But there is no way to patch the rents.
Each passing rain
Ages the crimson of the flowers;
The willows are tricked by the wind,
And their green gradually droops.

Man has no second chance at youth;
He grows old. The aged song thrush
Warbles again when spring has come,
But time does not revert to the past.
Oh, how I yearn for the days that are gone!
What would I do to recapture the past!"

Glory Days is pretty cool.

The lines above are from a noh play about a woman named Ono no Komachi who was a poetess in ancient Japan. She was renowned for her uncomparable beauty. As an old woman, all alone, she utters those words.

BTW, the play takes place in autumn (early autumn I gather) ... so I included it here. The setting is autumn ... not only the season, but in my viewpoint her stage in life.

From Burt on Sun, Oct 17, 2010 at 11:50:09 from 68.225.214.248

From burp on Tue, Oct 19, 2010 at 02:06:09 from 151.118.136.52

Yep, she's from Japan. Actually met her on a blind date here in Utah. I guess blind dates do work (on occassion!).

My love of Japanese literature and poetry is not necessarily shared by my wife. She seems to prefer American and British mystery/suspense novels.

Okay, okay ... I weigh a pound more this week.  This is why I only weigh in once a week at the same time.  Little extra drink of water last night?  Extra helping of my wife's delicious chicken marsala?  Point is ... I tend to have little ups and downs when measuring, but over the course of time if I'm down overall ... all is good.

Wife joined me again for a run.  Shorter distance again, but I'm enjoying the company.  Kind of fun watching her race on ahead.

Picked up a box of fresh apples at the local farmers market on Saturday. Enjoying them before the long stored apples of mid to late winter start appearing in a few months (yuck!)...

"Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness,

Conspiring with him how to load and bless
With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eves run;
To bend with apples the moss'd cottage trees,
And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core;

My shoes have lost a lot of cushion, so I went to the running store to get some shoes.  Two pair felt good (a pair of Asics and Brooks).  Since I've been running in a pair of Asics and they've felt good, I bought the Asics.  They told me to try them out for up to 30 minutes on a treadmill and bring them back if necessary.  After walking and running on the treadmill for about 25 minutes to test them out, I decided to return them and get the Brooks.  I'll try them out on the treadmill sometime over the next few days.  If that doesn't fly, I'll go get the Asics back.  At least I'll have run in both and will know which I prefer.

Wanted to run some more ... outside tonight.  So I put on my old pair of shoes and went out in the cold without my wife this time.  A chilly breeze hit me head on for a while, but let up for the rest of the run.  Though humid, at least it wasn't raining!  A few Canadian Geese on the lake were roused by something and called out, but settled down after several minutes.

Total miles combined (treadmill and on the road is 5.75).  If I didn't walk a good ways on the treadmill I would have recorded a combined distance well over 6 miles.  I have a 10k on my goals list, since I haven't officially run one yet ... but ... I really haven't trained for it and it wouldn't be problem.  Maybe the time wouldn't be great, but the mileage wouldn't be bad.  Maybe I just need to start looking toward the goal of a half-marathon.  I would need to train for that.

I was fortunate to get Type 1 (juvenile) when I was in my '20s. Past adolescence (when most Type 1's struggle) and still alot of life to work towards living. I've been blessed to always have fairly tight control. Hope to live a quality life well into my later years. I'll work toward it anyway.
