Good evening world!
Had a Stress test a couple weeks ago and am ready to go. I've been involved in athletics all my life, but have typically loathed running just to run. Played a mid-fielder in soccer when I was young and spent hours doing wind sprints and chasing a little ball around so I know running is in me, but ... I may be a little too much on the fast twitch side of things. That's okay though. we'll see how this goes. I would like to keep a decent (for me) squat since deep squatting helps my knees and hips to feel good. I should rename the blog, "Heavy and Slow" to reflect my long-distance running sensibilities. lol.
I'll only check my weight once a week. I don't want to obsess over it ... this is about health to me. Ultimately I'd like to get down to 195 lbs. I'd like running to be a part of accomplishing this goal.
09/14/10 Edit: I'd like to keep track of my food intake, but being diabetic ... instead of "calories", I may just keep track of grams of carbohydrate ... this is something I already do. I usually can lose weight with ~225 grams of carbohydrates a day within a balanced diet of protein and fat intake (and normal activity). With running ... I'll have to see how my body responds (I.e., insulin requirements). |

Recently moved to South Jordan from Davis County ... trying to figure out the nice trails around here to run on. Too busy to run tomorrow, so will try to find a trail nearby to run on on Thursday.
EDIT: Hmmm.... I'm off by one calendar day (Doh!) ... I'll post tomorrow and be back on track. I didn't have time to run today anyway ... had tons of meetings until late in the day and didn't make home in time to go for a late run. Time to get those 7 hours sleep time I've already said I'd get. ;) |

No activity today. Late home from work and stomach unsettled.
Did scope out one of the canals that Davy Crockett mentions on his web page ( http://www.crockettclan.org/blog/ ). Not too far from my home. I noticed with a lot of the new development that there are a few signs posted here and there to not trespass on the service road along the canal. Some locations have no signs posted. Has Davy Crockett run this recently? I'll have to ask. Looks pretty convenient for me and it would be off the pavement. We'll check it out. |

Finally got out for a nice run this evening. Checked out along one of the canals near my new home and ran out along it for a ways ... made a loop back to my house on some walking paths. Surprising how easy it felt considering this is only the second time I've run this month. |

Will be checking my weight every Monday morning. It may appear that I've lost ~12 pounds last week ... totally bogus. I put in 232 last week just to get going as an estimate. That was the weight I was at a couple of weeks ago, mid-afternoon (after lunch), and fully clothed.
I'll use the 220.5 as the baseline going forward. Good thing is ... 10 less pounds to mentally lose. This puts me at 25 - 30 lbs to go.
Played some tennis, then ran with my wife tonight. She rips up the tennis courts and likes to do 100 meter interval training. I joined her on several intervals, but my legs were a little drained still from Saturday. Fun to do some all out sprints though. Guess this old man still has a little kick left in him. My wife still kicked my butt though!!!
Still a little smoke in the air here in Daybreak from the nearby Herriman fire. My lungs were burning a little toward the end of my run tonight.
I was deeply saddened as I watched the fire driven down the mountainside by the wind last night from my house. Not sure how many homes were lost ... I'll need to check the news. |

No running today. Resting a little. I really don't feel like I have the mileage base to run every single day. I think different body parts would start to rebel. 3-4 times a week will be my goal for now.
Edit: Not as much sleep as I would have liked. |

Good evening!
The cool weather helped push me past 5 miles tonight. Quiet, contemplative, mild pace. My right hamstring is a little tight from the intervals the other day, but feels good after tonight's run.
Discovered that site Map My Run to help with the distances. Looks like I may have been underestimating some of my distances. Last Saturday's run was spot on my guess. I'm sure there's some variation depending on my mouse clicks, but as long as I have a relative value I don't really care too much.
Good night everyone!!! |

Chased after a little yellow ball on a tennis court tonight in place of running. Was thinking about running later in the evening, but got some dinner with my wife and watched foreign film.
The film was a romance film called Kinamand (Danish) or Chinaman (English) starring Bjarne Henriksen and Vivian Wu. Anyone seen it? Both my wife and I enjoyed it.
Possible spoiler alert ....
There is a quote at the end before the credits ...
"I thought that love could wait too late too late too late" credited to Omi
Would anyone happen to have any info on this poem? One of my interests is Japanese literature ... this could be Japanese, Chinese, ???? I have no idea.

Nice run tonight. Felt strong.
Woke up from a nap ... felt tired, blood glucose levels were a little elevated. Didn't feel motivated. Once I got out the door and about a mile down the road, I felt like I could go forever.
My shoes are starting to feel a little overdue. I'll probably find a new pair this week sometime and start logging miles in them on this site. |

Privileged to play a little tennis with my wife.
The days are getting shorter and we weren't able to play for long. In the dwindling light my wife performed her agility and quickness exercises. I joined her for some ladders. I'm feeling it now!!! After sprints last week and now some ladders, I'm a little sore where I haven't been sore for a long time. Don't think it will affect my distance running ... tomorrow.

More tennis. My wife set me up with lessons last fall and they've picked up again to a couple of weeks a month now with fall upon us. My instructor made me run a fair amount.
My soreness has let up from Tuesday.
Been a very stressful week ... . Get back onto schedule this Monday.

Stepped on a sharp piece of metal Friday and ended up with a puncture wound in my right arch. Have taken a few days off to let it heal up a bit.
My lovely wife wanted to go for a run tonight, so we went out for about a 5k. Was fun running with my wife. No intervals or court sprints tonight for me! My foot must be healed up enough to run now ... didn't really bother me.
"The sound of the Gion Shouja bells echoes the impermanence of all things; the color of the sala flowers reveals the truth that the prosperous must decline. The proud do not endure, they are like a dream on a spring night; the mighty fall at last, they are as dust before the wind."
--- Heike Monogatori (平家物語), opening lines (trans. Helen McCullough)

My awesome wife was up for a longer run tonight. I took her along a loop that I have run a few times here. We cut it short a little, but still almost got 5 miles in.
Getting cold! Tempted to turn the furnace on in the morning. We'll see what the temps are.
Time for bed!

Helped someone move a piano last Saturday and strained my legs a little (muscles were cold w/ no light lifting to warm up with). Feel good now, so went for a run tonight.
Was Happy to have my wife with me. She runs faster than I do at these shorter distances, so I have to try to keep up. Pushes me a bit. But when we run the longer distances, I can pace myself through it until she slows down. Or maybe she's just being kind (?!) ;-)
"Days go by without a single bowl of food; Whom can I ask for one? At night my tattered rags fail to cover me, But there is no way to patch the rents. Each passing rain Ages the crimson of the flowers; The willows are tricked by the wind, And their green gradually droops. Man has no second chance at youth; He grows old. The aged song thrush Warbles again when spring has come, But time does not revert to the past. Oh, how I yearn for the days that are gone! What would I do to recapture the past!"

Okay, okay ... I weigh a pound more this week. This is why I only weigh in once a week at the same time. Little extra drink of water last night? Extra helping of my wife's delicious chicken marsala? Point is ... I tend to have little ups and downs when measuring, but over the course of time if I'm down overall ... all is good.
Wife joined me again for a run. Shorter distance again, but I'm enjoying the company. Kind of fun watching her race on ahead.
Picked up a box of fresh apples at the local farmers market on Saturday. Enjoying them before the long stored apples of mid to late winter start appearing in a few months (yuck!)...
"Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness,
Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun;
Conspiring with him how to load and bless
With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eves run;
To bend with apples the moss'd cottage trees,
And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core;
... "

My shoes have lost a lot of cushion, so I went to the running store to get some shoes. Two pair felt good (a pair of Asics and Brooks). Since I've been running in a pair of Asics and they've felt good, I bought the Asics. They told me to try them out for up to 30 minutes on a treadmill and bring them back if necessary. After walking and running on the treadmill for about 25 minutes to test them out, I decided to return them and get the Brooks. I'll try them out on the treadmill sometime over the next few days. If that doesn't fly, I'll go get the Asics back. At least I'll have run in both and will know which I prefer.
Wanted to run some more ... outside tonight. So I put on my old pair of shoes and went out in the cold without my wife this time. A chilly breeze hit me head on for a while, but let up for the rest of the run. Though humid, at least it wasn't raining! A few Canadian Geese on the lake were roused by something and called out, but settled down after several minutes.
"I will think of you, love
On evenings when the grey mist
Rises above the rushes
And chill sounds the voice
Of the wild ducks crying."

Total miles combined (treadmill and on the road is 5.75). If I didn't walk a good ways on the treadmill I would have recorded a combined distance well over 6 miles. I have a 10k on my goals list, since I haven't officially run one yet ... but ... I really haven't trained for it and it wouldn't be problem. Maybe the time wouldn't be great, but the mileage wouldn't be bad. Maybe I just need to start looking toward the goal of a half-marathon. I would need to train for that.
Good night!!

Chilly!
What was supposed to be a quick 3 miles ended up a little longer and a little more effort than planned. Blood glucose levels were dropping throughout necessitating a couple of Gu's along the way. Good thing I took the Gu's ... returned home to a low glucose reading.
My wife ran like a jackrabbit. I think she spent more time waiting or backtracking than just heading down the road!
Snow beneath whose chilly softness
Some that never lay
Make their first Repose this Winter
I admonish Thee
Blanket Wealthier the Neighbor
We so new bestow
Than thine acclimated Creature
Wilt Thou, Austere Snow?

Just treadmill time today ... tested another pair shoes out. The shoes felt good, but were a little short. Exchanged them for a bigger size. I'm think I'm honing in on the ideal pair of shoes.

Some more treadmill miles to test out the latest pair of shoes. I've found the winner! I like these and will keep them. Will start logging the miles with these.
Was on vacation the end of last week, so didn't get much running in.
I'd like to think when life is done
That I had filled a needed post,
That here and there I'd paid my fare
With more than idle talk and boast;
That I had taken gifts divine,
The breath of life and manhood fine,
And tried to use them now and then
In service for my fellow men.
